The APIIC Ltd. had taken Board resolution to ensure environmental improvement in its existing industrial estates. To start with, a budget of Rs 500 million has been earmarked for implementing environmental improvement and related infrastructure measures. The German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) is providing support to APIIC under the Advisory Services in Environmental Management Programme (ASEM) for the Eco Industrial Estate Project. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between APIIC and GTZ in September 2008 to facilitate the transformation of existing industrial estates/parks into Eco-Industrial-Estates/Parks and for the new upcoming industrial parks in Andhra Pradesh. An Environment Cell has been created at APIIC together with its experts and experts from GTZ.
APIIC is keen to address the environmental concerns in the Industrial Parks comprehensively dealing with proper siting, adequate environmental infrastructure and environmental management systems in the Industrial Parks. With the technical cooperation from GTZ, APIIC has started paving a way for transformation of the existing industrial parks in Andhra Pradesh into Eco Industrial Parks.
The concept for new eco industrial parks is based on 3Ms including site master planning & development, marketing and management that would adequately incorporate environmental considerations right from planning stage.

Similarly, the experiences and learning from the pilot phase of developing eco industrial estates would be applied (ref. fig below) for the existing Industrial Parks to upgrade them into eco industrial parks.

The expected results from the eco efforts of APIIC with support from GTZ for the period 2008 to 2012 include:
New Industrial Parks » Upto 10 new Industrial Parks are planned with the concepts of eco industrial estate and sustainable industrial development thereby acting as models for other upcoming industrial parks.
Existing Industrial Parks » In upto 30 to 50 existing industrial parks of APIIC, the concepts of eco industrial estates are introduced with environmental infrastructure, environmental management of industrial parks and reduced pollution.
Industries in existing Industrial Parks » In upto 100 industries in the existing Industrial Parks, environmental performance is improved through the concepts of waste minimisation, green productivity, ecoprofit are introduced.
Environmental quality » Improved environmental quality with in upto 30 Industrial Parks and reduced risks/impacts on environment.
Capacity development
» Upto 100 managers of APIIC (at various levels) are trained on Eco Industrial Estate certificate courses.
» Upto 100 stakeholders (professionals, consulting organisations/institutions, industrial park developers, IALAs etc.) are provided with training on eco industrial estate planning & management.
» APIIC internalises sustainable industrial development concepts with well formulated policies, programmes, strategies, budget and manpower.
» IALAs of existing Industrial Parks are strengthened to deal with improved environmental management of Industrial Parks.
» Positive strategic alliances are created with expert agencies, developers etc. for dealing with sustainable industrial planning and development.
» Upto 10 manuals/documents/case studies are available for reference for multiplication of sustainable industrial development concepts.
